Its the Bread

Its the bread!

Philly Italian Hoagie

Some folks think we can’t get a good Italian Hoagie (Sub) here is because we can’t get the good Italian meats, but I say it’s the bread. Just something about the Philly Hoagie roll. Must be the water?

I had a great vegetarian version of the philly cheese sandwich at Cornicopia. Not a bad replacement to the original!

I couldn’t agree more about the bread. I’m from the east coast originally and it’s the food that I think I miss the most. Hard rolls, real bagels, good knishes….sigh, I miss NY & Philly.

It is the bread! We have an unlimited supply of fantastic ingredients out here. But, for some reason, Eugenians have never been able to “consistently” produce good bread for sandwiches. Weird, considering the number of east coast transplants we have in this town. Maybe it is the water….

What i find most offensive in Eugene are those estaqblishments that try to sell what thery call Italian bread and it is nothing like Italian Bread. I am talking about that soggy, foamy substance that appears more like foam rubber. Please call it something else but not Italian Bread.

It absolutely is the bread. I’m from Philadelphia and have been searching for years for a decent cheese steak. Cornucopia has one that’s passable, except for the damn bread. By the way, for those looking for a good Italian hoagie, the #9 sandwich at Jimmy John’s is pretty good, with one minor exception – their standard menu includes mayo on this sandwich. Please make sure to order it without the damn mayo! I love mayo, but it doesn’t belong on any self respecting hoagie.
